Print Course: Ideating

‘Hyper-Nature’ was the starting point for me in the print course. I explored the two words extensively finding other words and meanings that I would find interesting to delve into. I settled on the word ‘flamboyant’ which also incidentally happens to be a style of French architecture. French Gothic architecture was born out of the accommodation of Christianity in Europe as well as a growing interest in the Renaissance. I associated the terms ‘studiously careless’, ‘sensuous’, and ‘ribbed’ as well as ‘joyfully flippant to it. Not only did these terms reflect the essence of the movement, but also provided an inspiring platform from which to design. These terms became the emphasis while I visited churches around Bangalore, including St.Marks Cathedral, St.Mary’s Basilica and the Bible Society, what is now the Hard Rock Café. The images became near examples of the phrases.

The images that I took of these churches would come to be my mood boards because these were personal experiences and hence would make the mood boards richer. The images that I’ve used are of St.Marks Cathedral which is not of gothic architecture but of the colonial style. My mood boards consist of images that inspire colour, pattern, form and material. The final mood board gives the essence of the subtle lavish style of British architecture with the use of line, form as well as hints of colour.

The colour palette consists of two colour ways. One is of rich earthy oranges and browns. The other colour way emphasizes on the pastel shades of white, beige and cream. It then progresses to the greys and finally ends at black.
